The Fearless Stenographers Conference 2024 – Recap
The Fearless Stenographers Conference 2024 – Recap Third time’s a charm! “Steno in the City” (SITC) kicked off its third annual Fearless Stenographers Conference in Long Beach, California, this past Spring, April 11th through April 13th. Court reporters, captioners, students, videographers, firm owners, steno spouses, realtors, attorneys, and accountants were in attendance, once again, demonstrating that “Steno in the City” continues to bridge the gap and foster collaborative opportunities by bringing the legal community and out-of-network associates together for a fabulous time! On Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, to kick off the conference, “Steno in the City” held a pre-mixer event in downtown Los Angeles on the 51st floor of City Club LA overlooking California’s gorgeous skyline. Our honorary sponsors for the event were Urlaub Bowen & Associates and SPS Litigation Services. We offer a hearty thank you to both for your continued support of “Steno in the City”! The evening included a private dinner party for attorneys, top sponsors, and faithful supporters of “Steno in the City.” In addition, four students, Lydia Martinez, Sherell Bain, Annie Mueller, and Natalie Ruben were sponsored by SITC and attended the exclusive dinner at our private affair. Following the dinner, we held a happy hour for our steno professionals that featured an array of tasty appetizers and a cash bar with alluring cocktails. The festivities allowed reporters from Los Angeles County, as well as those who had flown in early for the conference, to enjoy a pre-game networking mixer. A big shout-out to Los Angeles Superior Court!
Fearless Stenographers Conference: Day 1 & 2
Seminar Sessions Prior to the networking event of Thursday, April 11th, 2024, we held our third annual “Speed in the City” stenographic contest which was hosted by the illustrious Allie Hall. The first session of the conference, “Laptops for Legal Proceedings,” garnered rave reviews. Tim Faulk truly captivated the audience, delivering an informative and exciting presentation on technical aspects of the court reporting profession. Friday, April 12th, 2024, the second day of the conference, commenced with an impressive lineup of speakers. Moderator Kerry Murphy, CA CSR, RPR; Allie Hall, RDR, CSR, CRR; and Shacara Mapp, RMR, CRR, FCRR, shared different aspects of “Steno in the City’s” core missions. Their discussions on “Serving, Advocating, and Leading in the Court Reporting Profession” served as powerful inspiration for our attendees, encouraging them to step up and become active supporters of our industry. Our keynote speakers electrified the crowd, prompting deep reflection on confronting fears. Regina DeMoville, CSR, captioner extraordinaire, and Brandi Killingsworth-Ray, TX CSR, a captivating speaker, delivered riveting accounts of their own personal journeys in overcoming fear. As court reporters, possessing the mindset and skill to capture a verbatim record demands both expertise and a spirit of fearlessness, a point driven home masterfully by both keynote speakers. Anissa Nierenberger, RPR, CRR, CRC, CRI, reminded us why settling for just “okay” is simply unacceptable in our field. In a fast-moving era of technological advancement, Anissa provided attendees with sensible strategies and solutions for enhancing their writing skills, emphasizing the importance of always striving for excellence. Finally, several additional seminar sessions followed, enabling our attendees to walk away with a renewed mindset and commitment to act, get involved, and become better reporters.

This is yet another fine example of UNITY and GIVING BACK to the profession! We truly appreciate and thank you! Supporting Steno in the City’s Founder – Shaunise Day On a more personal note, over the past two years, Shaunise Day has suffered an undue share of heartache and life challenges. However, in the midst of adversity, Shaunise continues to get back up, dust herself off, and knock out every obstacle in her way. Last year, as many of you know, Shaunise’s little brother Stevie Day was a pedestrian who was hit by a car and unfortunately passed away on December 23rd, 2022. There are two things that Shaunise loves with all her heart, and that is Stevie and steno. Stevie’s untimely demise had occurred in the middle of Shaunise’s planning for the 2023 Fearless Stenographers Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Unfortunately, adversity struck again. In January 2024, while preparing for the Fearless Stenographers Conference in Long Beach, California, Shaunise was diagnosed with breast cancer. However, she would soon realize that the steno community would rally behind her and show up for her in unimaginable ways. The community created a sponsorship in the name of Shaunise’s beloved brother Stevie and donated a total of $3,500 to the fund. Before Shaunise was scheduled for her mastectomy, she was immersed in properly planning and preparing for her recovery journey. It was then that she received a surprise phone call from Allie Hall, who shared the good news that the profession had raised over $5,000 for Shaunise’s care. The founder of Steno in the City continues to share her appreciation for the profession and what this generous gift means to her, advising us all to “be good to others and treat them with kindness because you never know when you yourself will need help. You just never know.” We are thrilled to announce that Shaunise is nearing the end of her recovery and is doing great. She owes a debt of gratitude to the steno community who stuck by her every step of the way during difficult times. Champion Steno – Be Your Own Champion! We would also like to thank Chase and Alyssa Fraizer for stepping up to the plate to assist Shaunise throughout her health challenges. You are deeply appreciated for always lending a hand behind the scenes for Steno in the City! One Team, One Goal, STENO!
